Tomato Alfredo pasta is perfect for those who like the tangy flavor of tomato and the richness of cream. I’d never tried making it before, so I decided to give it a shot one afternoon for lunch over Christmas break.

Down under in Davao, Part 4

(Part 1 comes first, followed by Part 2, then Part 3, before this one. Just saying.)

Day 4 started with us getting up early for a buffet breakfast, which we wanted to finish right away. It was, after all, our last day, and we wanted to make the most of it. First thing we did after eating was take another dip in the pool, then when we could no longer put off the inevitable, we freshened up, packed up our stuff, and checked out of Hotel Tropika.

Down under in Davao, Part 3

(You know what? You’ll enjoy this part if you read Part 1 and Part 2 first. Trust me.)

In the morning, I got up early (around 6 a.m.) and went to the beach to have a look around. Today was our second and last day here, so I wanted to make sure I soak up the scene before we left. My sister joined me about an hour later, and eventually, everyone else made it out of bed to converge and have breakfast at the hotel’s dining hall. Then, it was check out time.

We got up early the next morning excited to start the day, which happens to be Samal Island day. Beach day. Swimming day. Kick-of-your-shoes-feel-the-sand-between-your-toes-and-splash-around day. Yep. Excited. After a quick breakfast, we hurriedly packed up, checked out of Pacific Palm, and met Kuya, who was waiting for us at the parking lot. He suggested that we buy lunch here at the city that we could take to and fork down at the beach. So after stopping at KFC for a looot of chicken, we headed to Sasa Wharf, where barges take people, whether on foot or on wheels, to and from Samal. We were in Kuya‘s vehicle, so we paid Php250 and off we went.

Okay, I know, I suck at keeping promises. Earlier last year I swore I’d write regularly, and I haven’t been able to do that in the past few months. I could just say I’ve been incredibly busy, but the truth is there are just some days when I haven’t felt up to it. I mean, we all have lazy days, right? But you know what? I do appreciate all of you who follow me, so I’m going to thank you by really buckling down and writing more often, starting with my long-delayed account of last year’s final trip: Davao. So many restaurants were popping up left and right, and it was getting harder and harder to keep up. My quickest go-to meal is a sandwich if I don’t feel like having a meal with rice (a common component in any meal in the Philippines), and one of my favorite savory kinds is the simple but tasty tuna salad. I usually make a huge tub of it and keep it in the fridge so I don’t have to start from scratch every single time I want one (and because people in the house seem to enjoy the recipe I’ve been using for years).

Surf’s up at La Union

It’s been four months since I took my trip to La Union with a friend, and I haven’t felt up to writing about it until now, so I hope you won’t mind a little bit of prattling. I’ll try to keep the chatter to a minimum, especially since the photos are a lot more interesting.

I’ve actually been to La Union years ago (with my sister and her friends), but we did nothing but eat and get beat up by the waves as we foolishly tried to swim at the beach. This isn’t my first time surfing too; I went to Siargao a few years ago where I got my first taste of it. I wiped out more times than I got to stand, but, as any surfer will tell you, it’s pretty addicting. So when the opportunity came to pay the province a visit again, I took it. This time, I went with fellow Motley Crew-er Dani (for reference, consult our group’s Alkan and Palawan trips), who has also been raring to go back to La Union for some surfing.

When kids turn seven (guest post)

My nephew celebrated his 7th birthday over a month ago, and being that this age is considered somewhat of a milestone, his parents decided to throw him a pretty big celebration, with a cotton candy stand and photo booth and everything. While his mom (my oldest sister) and my other older sister did a stellar job of putting the party together, it was successful in large part due to the suppliers that they hired. Sister Number 2—Justine Cariola-Cruz—was in charge of dealing with them before, during, and after the event, so I thought it would only be appropriate to have her as my very special guest for this blog post. After the jump, you’ll be reading her review of the suppliers.
